Wolters Kluwer Experts to Discuss ICD-10 Lessons Learned and Best Practices in Upcoming Complimentary Webinar

Posted in Press Releases on Monday, February 08, 2016.

The Health division of Wolters Kluwer, a leading global provider of information and point of care solutions for the healthcare industry, announced today that medical informatics experts from Health Language® will host a complimentary webinar to discuss best practices and lessons learned from the industry’s mammoth transition to ICD-10. Scheduled for February 9, 2016 at 1 p.m. EST, the event will provide insight into common ICD-10 clinical documentation challenges following the October 2015 go-live and solutions for improving reimbursement, reporting and patient tracking.

“The healthcare community at large has worked diligently for years to prepare for the unprecedented shift from ICD-9 to ICD-10, and we commend the industry for crossing the finish line successfully,” said David A. Del Toro, President and CEO of Clinical Software Solutions at Wolters Kluwer. “Now that the initial heavy lifting is done, providers must continue evaluating systems and processes to elevate documentation practices for optimal patient care and revenue capture.”

The webinar is designed to arm healthcare professionals who submit codes for reimbursement—including physicians, HIM managers and financial consultants—with the best-practice knowledge needed to enhance clinical documentation improvement programs. Kate Tierney, Lead Clinical Analyst, and Katie Sutton, Clinical Informatics Manager, will present documentation tips that reduce financial risk and improve specificity as well as explain the potential pitfalls of relying solely on industry crosswalks such as General Equivalency Mappings (GEMs). Drawing on 50 combined years in coding and clinical experience, the presenters will educate attendees on specific nuances and differences between ICD-9 and ICD-10 including use of encounter types in the new coding system.

Experts will also lead a discussion on how to leverage Health Language claims analytics solutions and mapping capabilities to drive informed business decisions and streamline ICD-10 remediation efforts. Through a foundation of analytics, users can identify and stratify DRG shifts and payment variance risks and pinpoint opportunities for clinical documentation improvement. The Health Language team of experts works with healthcare organizations to develop remediation plans and provide terminology (such as CPT-to-PCS) maps that can help remediate legacy systems, enable ICD-10 reports and analytics initiatives and develop effective risk mitigation strategies.

“ICD-10 is a crucial step forward for the healthcare industry that has the potential to impact patient care in a dramatic way,” said Del Toro. “Wolters Kluwer and Health Language are committed to equipping the industry with the tools needed to successfully position for the long-term and fully leverage the opportunities of the new coding system.”
