Wolters Kluwer to Present on the Financial Benefit of Improved Sepsis Outcomes at Becker’s CIO/HIT + Revenue Cycle Conference

Posted in Press Releases on Tuesday, August 23, 2016.

The Health division of Wolters Kluwer, a leading global provider of information and point of care solutions for the healthcare industry, will discuss how one hospital has saved millions in care costs through the improved early detection and treatment of sepsis at the upcoming Becker’s Hospital Review CIO/HIT + Revenue Cycle Conference. During “The ROI of Technology-Enabled Sepsis Mitigation,” Sean Benson, Vice President and General Manager of POC Advisor for Wolters Kluwer Clinical Software Solutions, will explore how Alabama’s Huntsville Hospital utilized real-time clinical surveillance and data analytics from POC Advisor™ to reduce sepsis mortality by 53%, as documented in the June 2016 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA).

The presentation will take place July 28 at 3:40 p.m. in the State Room at the Fairmont Hotel in Chicago.

A recent study from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality found that sepsis remains the most expensive condition treated in U.S. hospitals, with an annual price tag of nearly $24 billion. This represents an increase of $3.4 billion from 2011 to 2013.

“Every year, more attention is drawn to the terrible burden that sepsis places on patients and providers,” said Benson. “What’s more, the cost incurred from treating the condition can have a substantial impact on patient care throughout a hospital. Researchers have established the ability of POC Advisor to drastically improve how providers identify, treat and manage sepsis, resulting in a significant drop in both patient mortality and financial expenses associated with this deadly condition.”

POC Advisor uses automated, real-time surveillance that aggregates, normalizes and analyzes patient data from disparate clinical systems to deliver early sepsis alerts and treatment advice to clinicians via mobile devices and clinical portals. With hundreds of rules built into the platform to account for variables specific to individual patients, including comorbidities and medication abnormalities, POC Advisor ensures that alerts are both highly sensitive and specific.
