Health Language Solutions Advance Semantic Interoperability with Data Normalization Capabilities
A Semantically Normalized Information Model is Essential for Advancing Evidence-Based Protocols, Quality Improvement, Population Health Management, ACOs, and Other Forward-Looking Initiatives
DENVER, CO (February 21, 2014) — Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading global provider of information for healthcare professionals and students, announced today that it will demonstrate how its Health Language® Enterprise Terminology Platform can be used to integrate normalization services into health IT systems in Booth #1346 during the HIMSS14 Annual Conference & Exhibition in Orlando, FL, February 23-27.
In today’s healthcare landscape, patient information is spread across multiple communities and IT systems. These systems often contain varying terminology platforms—from clinical to administrative to those based on standards or localized clinical concepts. These disparate terminology lexicons must be normalized into a standard language so that the meaning of the data is unambiguous.
The automated translation algorithms within the Health Language Enterprise Terminology Platform can be used to normalize full catalogs or distinct elements from cryptic and poorly maintained source data into standard terminologies. A web-based access portal enables collaboration on translation and task review while also maintaining full terminology content versioning and a complete audit trail.
“The healthcare industry is dealing with a critical semantics challenge as the complexities associated with translating disparate clinical terms between health IT systems continue to obstruct interoperability and hinder wide-spread data sharing,” said Brian McDonald, Vice President, Health Language, Wolters Kluwer Health, Clinical Solutions. “Health Language solutions enable payers, providers and vendors to unlock the value of their data, resulting in interoperable, industry-standard data for use in reporting, analytics, data warehousing and other enterprise applications.”
